Little Green Fingers at The Hub Buckshaw Nursery

With spring finally in the air, the children at our Buckshaw Village nursery have been busy planting seeds in their very own on-site vegetable garden. Getting little hands into the soil is one of our favourite spring activities, and this year the children have already sown a fine crop for the growing season ahead.

Digging in for the growing season

Growing vegetables at nursery teaches children so much more than gardening. It helps them understand where their food comes from, encourages healthy eating and shows them how to nurture and care for living things. Best of all, it gets everyone outdoors, active and having plenty of fun in the fresh air.

This spring the children planted a lovely mix of vegetables for the season, including:

• Tomatoes
• Broccoli
• Peas
• Carrots
• Potatoes

Over the coming weeks the children will water and tend their seeds, watching them grow and, before long, harvesting the results of all their hard work.

Paula, our nursery manager, said: "Getting the children growing in nursery is about so many things: developing skills and providing practical experience, giving access to fresh healthy food, and the opportunity to spend time outdoors and be active. What's more it's great fun!"

Composting and looking after our environment

To go hand in hand with the garden, we have also installed a compost heap so we can responsibly recycle food waste from The Hub. It is a simple way to reduce what we throw away, and it gives the children a real, hands-on look at how food scraps break down to help feed the very garden they are growing.

Outdoor learning and hands-on activities like this are a big part of everyday life at our nursery. As an Ofsted Outstanding, Millie's Mark accredited setting, we love creating experiences that build curiosity, confidence and healthy habits that last a lifetime.
