The Physical & Social Benefits of Baby Swimming

Did you know that babies have a natural ability to swim? Even with this knowledge, we understand that introducing your baby to the water may seem daunting at first. Yet, there are so many physical and social benefits for you and your baby.

Not only does it teach them a valuable life skill by ensuring they’re safe and confident in the water, it’s also a great source of exercise. Let’s not forget, it’s fun and helps to make the bond between you even stronger. Here are a few benefits of baby swimming to put your mind at ease and encourage you to get your little one in the pool.

The Physical Benefits

The Physical Benefits

Muscle Development

First and foremost, swimming is a great form of exercise that your baby can do from birth. It may seem like a lot of splashing around, but even small movements can help with important muscle development. The same muscles used for swimming are those needed to hold up their head and move their arms and legs, making them stronger outside of the pool too. Swimming is also great for cardiovascular health, strengthening the heart, lungs and brain.

Improved Balance

The water is an ideal place for babies to improve their balance and coordination because the water acts as support and creates a subtle resistance. The simultaneous movement of their arms and legs, helps to improve their motor skills, which are also needed for crawling. As these skills continue to develop, they will have much better balance when learning to walk on their own two feet – meaning a few less bumps and bruises!

The Social Benefits

Swimming Builds Confidence

A 2013 study found that children who take swim lessons from a young age have more self confidence and independence both in and out of the water. Baby swimming starts this early, giving your little one the ability to enjoy the water without fear. Socialising with kids their own age will also come more naturally when it comes to introducing them to nursery.

Improved Sleeping Patterns and Appetite

As mentioned earlier, time in the water is hard work for babies! They’re working their bodies super hard while trying to stay warm. All that extra activity uses a lot of energy, so it’s not surprising that your baby will be extra hungry and sleepy after their session. Which means a bit more quiet time for mum and dad!

Parent – Baby Bonding

For many working parents, time in the pool is one of the few times they have to get that 1 on 1 quality time. The water is the perfect place to connect with your baby as it centres on trust and skin-to-skin contact, strengthening the bond you share.

Let’s not forget, It’s FUN! It’s a great opportunity for both parent and baby to socialise with the other swimmers. Seeing the joy on their little faces as they splash around is a priceless experience.
